Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Commissioner of Community Development will play a strategic role in leading the organization to achieve Council’s strategic plan in collaboration with the Executive Leadership Team providing strategic leadership to help Oakville achieve its vision to be a vibrant and livable community for all. You will champion the use of sound business planning, exceptional management practices and sustainable resource stewardship for a team of directors defining and protecting the vision of the town’s community in the areas of planning & development, building, economic development, and enforcement services. You will deliver corporate strategies and long-term plans for the Commission that guide the development of land in accordance with the Livable Oakville Official Plan. As Commissioner you will inspire and motivate staff, encourage ongoing employee development and a culture of continuous improvement. You are expected to attend and present at council meetings, public meetings and events, tribunals, hearings, and inquests. Managing sensitive and controversial issues with media, ratepayers, and the community is also a key aspect of the role as is fostering collaborative relationships with all stakeholders and encourages the community to be active and engaged in the municipality’s growth and development.
Ideally you are a registered planner and an accomplished leader who has progressively taken on senior executive positions in municipal government. You have experience leading large teams, ideally within a unionized environment, and have the financial skills to develop and administer complex operating and capital budgets. You are known for your ability to forge productive relationships, find creative solutions and are persuasive and skilled at negotiating agreements with multiple parties. You are politically astute, having worked at the highest levels of your organization and directly with elected officials. You pride yourself in providing excellent customer service and developing consensus on high-profile initiatives that have a lasting impact on communities.
