Fairfax County, VA (pop. 1.2 million) seeks an experienced and innovative leader to serve as its next Deputy County Executive. Appointed by the Board of Supervisors, this high-level executive will report directly to the County Executive and provide leadership across several key departments, including Planning and Development, Economic Initiatives, Public Works and Environmental Services, Transportation, Land Development Services, Code Compliance, and Environmental and Energy Coordination. This role is pivotal in ensuring the alignment of department goals with the Countywide Strategic Plan and the County’s One Fairfax policy, which focuses on equity and inclusivity. Fairfax County is looking for a collaborative, forward-thinking professional who can strategically address economic development, land use, and public works initiatives in one of the most dynamic regions in the country.
The ideal candidate will have a proven record of success in managing large, complex organizations, fostering strong relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders, and leading critical initiatives that support the County’s long-term goals. A strong commitment to public service excellence, equity, and inclusivity is essential for this role.
The successful candidate will demonstrate any combination of education and experience equivalent to a master's degree and at least ten years of increasingly responsible managerial experience working in a complex local government with seven of these years at the executive level. Proven experience and success in managing and resolving complex issues in the areas of economic development, land use, redevelopment and revitalization, transportation, and public work and environmental services, plus demonstrated experience collaborating across all areas of local government is preferred. A strong track record in leading large-scale redevelopment and transportation projects, which are critical areas for the County, is highly desired. Experience working in a diverse community, leading organizational change, and implementing strategic initiatives and projects is also preferred. Residency is not required.

Salary and Benefits:
The salary range for this position is $183,663 - $321,410, depending on qualifications, with a competitive benefits package.
